Mary Peterson

Dec. 24, 1917 – May 29, 2008

Mary Metcalf Peterson, 90, of Lebanon, died May 29, 2008 at Twin Oaks Rehabilitation and Specialty Care in Sweet Home.

She was born Dec. 24, 1917 in Sand Lake to George and Mary Anne “Maymie” (Maier) Galloway.

She grew up in Sand Lake on a dairy and graduated from Nestucca Union High School in 1938. She married George Coe Metcalf in April of 1939 in Sand Lake.

They lived in Klamath Falls for a short time and later moved to Waterloo, where they lived for many years. They moved to Springfield in the late 1960s. Mr. Metcalf died on Dec. 31, 1970.

She married Elmer Peterson on Dec. 29, 1981 in Springfield. He died on Jan. 3, 1986. Mrs. Peterson returned to Lebanon in 1987 to be closer to family and has lived here since.

She worked for several years as an in home caregiver in Springfield and Lebanon.

She enjoyed walking and reading and loved listening to Gospel music.

Mrs. Peterson is survived by her son, Melvin George Metcalf and his wife Betty of Medford; daughters, Iris Tucker and her husband Michael of Sweet Home and Pat Dykstra and her husband Wayne of Sun City West, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Tate; two brothers; and three sisters.

A memorial service was held June 2 at the Church of the Nazarene in Sweet Home, with private burial at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Lebanon.
