Mat Club wrestlers victorious at Oregon Classic, state tourney

Sweet Home Mat Club had five champions in the Oregon Classic kids wrestling tournaments, held Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond.

Bailey Chafin won the girls 16-and-Under 127-pound title, pinning her way through the tournament. In the final she pinned Faith Steach of the Molalla JuJu Warrior Mat Club in 2:21.

Jesse Landtroop was first at 14U 77 pounds, winning 5-2 over Landyn Fincher of Elgin’s Team Xtreme.

Kassidy Zajic was first in the Girls 12U 70-pound category, pinning Kyndrah Meadows of Central Oregon Wrestling Academy (Powell Butte) in 43 seconds for the title.

Colton McCubbins was first at 10U 120-plus, winning an 11-9 decision over Thomas Conklin of the Prineville’s Cowboy Mat Club in sudden-death overtime in the final.

AvaMarie Gaspard was first at Girls 10U 80 pounds, decisioning Lily Barton of Tillamook’s Mook Mat Club 7-2 in the final.

Runner-up finishers were: Jasper Victor at 12U 108, Dylan Hartsook at 12U135, Luke Rosa at 14U 136, and Lynkin Royer at 14U 250.

Bailey Chafin, who competed in two tournaments, also was second in the Girls 8U-14U tournament at 14U-127, losing by a fall to Sara Ortega of Yakima, Wash.’s Empire Wrestling Club.

Kyle Zajic was third at 14U 125.

Finishing fourth were: Lincoln Sutton at 8U 85, Cody Sieminski at 12U 67, Gavin Tyler at 14U 250, Tytus Hardee at 16U 106 and Cohen Gutierrez at 16U 170.

Sixth-place finishers were Harrison Kegler at 14U 114, Jeremiah Steagall at 14U 165, Mathew Jorgensen at 12U 63 and Eddie Quisenberry at 16U 195.

Other participants from the Mat Club were Elijah Cruz, Dillan Davis, Kellen Hartsook, Colton Lester, Macen Rosa, Jake Smith, Liam Vaughn and Riley Vaughn.

Sweet Home qualified 19 Mat Club wrestlers in the Oregon Wrestling Association Kids State Championships held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 29-30, at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond.

Bailey Chafin (14 and Under Girls), AvaMarie Gaspard (10U Girls) and Jasper Victor (12U) all took home state titles.

Placing second were Jesse Landtroop (14U), Colton McCubbins (10U), Lynkin Royer (14U) and Kassidy Zajik (12U Girls).

Third-place finishers were Tytus Hardee (16U), Harrison Kegler (14U), Colton Lester (16U) and Kyle Zajic (14U).

In fourth were Ben Brouillete (6U), Dillan Davis (14U) and Macen Rosa.

Fifth-placers were Ryder Farris (12U), Bode Hart (16U), Dylan Hartsook (12U) and Cody Sieminski (12U). Jeremiah Steagall placed sixth at 14U.

Also competing were Eli Cruz, Wiley Farris, Jace Gagne, Kellen Hartsook, Amos Jorgensen, Mathew Jorgensen, Jackson Schaefer, Lincoln Sutton, Fletcher Utter and Charles Utter.
