Max Delano Dec. 3, 1934 – July 6, 2008

Max Lee Delano, 73, of Salem, formerly of Sweet Home, died July 6, 2008 of cancer.

He was born Dec. 3, 1934 in Neosho, Mo., to Ernest “Buck” Delano and Lillian Merle Watson.

He married Barbara Slater on Dec. 17, 1983 in Salem.

Mr. Delano moved to Oregon in 1948 and graduated from Detroit High School in 1952. He joined the Navy in 1955, serving until 1959. When he got out of the Navy he worked in the woods.

Mr. Delano moved to Salem in the early 1960s. He went into sales in 1965. He moved to Colorado in 1989 and returned to Oregon in 1997, moving to the Sweet Home area. He retired in 1997.

Mr. Delano was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Eagles and Elks.

He enjoyed gardening and tinkering and repairing things.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons Carl and Gary; stepson Bill Bowers; daughters Linda McLain and Sherry Kay Purcella; stepdaughters Susan Anderson, Julie Erikson and Kelly McClain; brothers Melvin “Bud” and Tim; sisters Marilyn Friend and Mary Ann Hinman; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Delano was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Donna Carol.

A celebration of his life, with military honors, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at the VFW in Sweet Home.
