McKercher’s mill was winner at World’s Fair

Editor’s note: Following is a brief selection of the contents of the history/photo book being created by the Sweet Home Genealogy Society, with expected publication on Dec. 10. Read the book for details.

John M. McKercher inherited the Finley Mill, on the Calapooia River east of Brownsville, after his brother Daniel, who managed the mill, was murdered in 1895.

The mill was powered by a water wheel supplied from a flume off the log dam.

Though John did not want to enter his flour in the 1905 World’s Fair, Mrs. McKercher was listening when some men asked for samples and she gave them some.

Later, a package arrived with a gold medal and certificate – Best flour in the world.
