For The New Era
Meals on Wheels, which delivers hot meals to home-bound elderly and disabled people throughout Sweet Homem, needs help.
The program relies on volunteers, said site manager Norene Dennis, who noted that she is the only one working in the program who isn’t volunteering. They currently need volunteers to wash dishes, put together food packages, and deliver meals.
“The program wouldn’t exist without volunteers,” Dennis said. “They are what make the program work.”
Dishwashers are needed all on all three days, and packaging volunteers are needed on Tuesdays and Fridays. Delivery drivers are needed all three days, or at least once day a week. All shifts are from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license and insurance and agree to a background check as they will be interacting one-on-one with people.
Dennis says that, while she is grateful for the support from elderly volunteers, she is looking for people under the age of 60 to help keep the program running.
“Obviously, it’s a very rewarding opportunity,” she said. “I myself started out as a volunteer driver. Volunteering to do good for other people is just the most rewarding thing you can do.”
