Meeting chance to discuss sports

Editor:

It seems that some people of the community may be getting the wrong information so I would like to clarify some things.

The Sweet Home Boys and Girls club is a private donation-based organization. I support what they are and remember when they were just a small building on the corner.

I have had my kids in their programs for two years and believe they are a good resource for the community. I encourage anyone that wants to donate to them to do so. My family has donated in the past and will continue giving some in the future.

I believe that I also have a right to voice my opinion, especially when my children are involved. This is why I decided to run for the Sweet Home School Board. I’m not afraid to speak up and say what I think. I believe this is a needed quality for a political leader.

The Boys and Girls Club, like I said before, is a private business while the Sweet Home School District is a public entity. I am an elected official representing the district and am proud and honored to donate my time. Being an elected official has many rules attached to it that most people don’t know about.

The letter I wrote a few weeks ago (Oct. 15) was signed as a concerned parent. This was legal to write as long as I signed it as a parent and let people know that I was not representing the school board.

Since then, at our last School Board meeting I had requested intramural sports for elementary schools be put on the agenda. The case I made in front of the other members was that I believed elementary-aged children did not need to be traveling out of town to play sports, that as a district our motto is “Educate for success.”

Kids need enough time to do their homework and spend time with their family. It’s hard to do this when, on Tuesday night at 6:30, your child plays in Jefferson and Wednesday she plays at 6:30 in Scio. This is, for a fifth-grader, the only option currently being offered.

That’s why, along with some other reasons, I asked the board’s approval to form a committee and see if there was a need in the community for another option.

This would include a town hall-style meeting open to the public to give their thoughts. After a little discussion it was approved. I plan on representing the Sweet Home School District with honesty and integrity. See you at the meeting!
