Michael “Scott” Melcher, 59, of Sweet Home, passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2026. Known to those who loved him as Scott, he was born Jan. 22, 1967, in Lebanon to Michael and Glenda (Harcrow) Melcher.
Sweet Home was his home for his entire life. It was more than just the place where he lived – it was the community he loved, the place he raised his family, built his business, made lifelong friendships, and gave so much of himself.
Scott attended Sweet Home schools and graduated in 1985. He went on to spend a year at Linfield College before earning his business degree from Oregon State University. In 1991, he returned home and joined his dad and brother in the family logging business. Through hard work, dedication, and determination, Scott helped build the business into a successful company. It was something he was incredibly proud of, and today his sons carry that legacy forward.
Scott loved being outdoors and making memories with the people he cared about. He enjoyed camping, side-by-sides, cruising, traveling, and exploring places off the beaten path.
He especially loved discovering back roads and finding new adventures. One of his most memorable adventures was a 21-day trip to the Arctic Ocean. He had recently taken up Jeeping and was enjoying the freedom of getting out, exploring, and simply taking time away from everyday life.
But more than anything, Scott loved his family and his friends. He had a quiet strength about him. He was kind, respectful, genuine, and compassionate. He had a way of putting people first and making those around him feel important. He didn’t need to be the loudest person in the room to make an impact. His actions, his loyalty, and the way he cared for others spoke for him.
Scott believed in giving back to the community that had given so much to him. He shared his time, energy, and passion with organizations including the Sweet Home Boys & Girls Club, the Oregon Logging Conference, and the Linn County Fire Protection Board. He cared deeply about Sweet Home and wanted to see his community and the people in it succeed.
Scott is survived by his wife of 34 years, Wendi Melcher, who was blessed to share a lifetime of love, memories, adventures, and family with him.
He is also survived by his son, Nathaniel Melcher and wife Shantel; and his granddaughters Elliott, 5, Emilia, 3, and Ellora, 2; his son Christopher Melcher and wife Milah, and their daughter and newest granddaughter, Lennin Scott, 8 months; his parents, Michael and Glenda Melcher; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robbie Melcher, in 2010; and his in-laws, Jim Salsbery and Carol Ann Salsbery.
For those who knew Scott, there are certain words that will always come to mind: kindness, respect, quiet strength, love and genuineness.
But to me, he was so much more. He was my husband, my partner, my friend, and the person I shared 34 years of my life with. I will forever be grateful for the life we built together, the family we created, and all the memories that will now become treasures I carry with me.
Scott’s presence will be deeply missed, but the love he gave, the lives he touched, and the legacy he leaves through his family and community will continue on.

A memorial service celebrating Scott’s life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, in the main gym at Sweet Home High School. A luncheon will follow at the Sweet Home Boys & Girls Club.
Private burial took place at Gilliland Cemetery.
