The Sweet Home girls soccer team fell to 0-4 on the season with a 7-0 loss on the road against Western Christian on Thursday, Sept. 14.
Despite the result, Head Coach Ramiro Santana said it was the best game the Huskies have played this season.
“We got beat by one girl, not the whole team,” he said. That one girl was sophomore Haley Miersma, who scored six of the Pioneers’ seven goals.
Santana noted how Miersma’s speed overwhelmed the Huskies.
“We just couldn’t match that girl,” he said. “Every time she got the ball in the middle of the field she just dribbled through every single one of us.”
Western Christian scored six of its goals in the first half.
Still, Santana focused on the positives. “Our girls have improved amazingly,” he said, noting that six girls who had never played soccer prior to this year “did very well.”
He added that “It was the first time they actually talked, and they passed. And I think they all had fun.”
Since that game, the team has been concentrating on passing and shooting in practice. “If we don’t shoot, we don’t score,” the coach said.
This week the Huskies start league play, hosting Stayton (1-4) at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21.
