Mud mania: Mud Fest makes another big splash

The annual Mud Fest went about as smoothly as could be hoped for Saturday, organizers said.

The weather was good,” said Nancy Frick of the Santiam Four Wheel Drive Association, which puts on the event. “The participants were good. No mishaps. No accidents. There were lots of people getting stuck and

playing in the mud.”

The line to enter cleared Highway 228 by about 8:15 a.m., Frick

said, probably the earliest yet. Last year, the line was off the highway

by 8:30 a.m. or 8:45 a.m. The event started at 9 a.m.

She said the

club always enjoys having the Kiwanis on the site preparing food for the

organization and participants, and she thanked the participants for

coming out and making a great event.

This was the fourth year at the

new site after moving from Berlin Road, where the association held its

last Mountain Mud Festival in 2009, and the Foster lake bed, where an

informal event kicked off the string of festivals in the late 1960s.
