Firefighters work to evacuate a smoke-filled apartment at 1237 Nandina St., apartment 7, Friday evening, Sept. 25. According to a fire report, tenant Anita Lewis had been cooking before leaving the apartment. Upon returning, she found smoke coming from her residence. The fire originated in the kitchen, apparently the stove top, according to the investigation. Bystanders had extinguished most of the fire before firefighters arrived. They found a small fire still burning and extinguished it, then used a thermal imager to check for extension into other apartment. The fire caused an estimated $5,000 damage to the apartment and $2,000 to the contents. The property is owned by Jim Vandehey.
