Newport 4, Sweet Home 3
Newport snatched victory from the Huskies, scoring two runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Huskies 4-3 at home on Thursday in the league opener.
“It was a great Val-Co league game between two good teams,” said Coach Matt Matuszak.
Newport scored a run in the second inning, and the Huskies answered in the third.
The Huskies broke the tie in the fourth inning, but Newport caught up again in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Brock Cota went from first to home when Zach Miller hit a double.
The Huskies held the lead until the seventh inning when Newport slipped ahead.
Sweet Home managed to get a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh from Brock Cota, but the Huskies were unable to score him.
Zach Bearden was credited with the win on the mound, and Tristan Metcalf was credited with a save in the seventh. Brock Smith relieved Bearden in the fifth inning.
Colton Holly pitched five innings for the Huskies. Gavin Kauffman relieved him in the sixth inning.
Collecting hits on the game were Jamie Steinbacher, T.J. Sipe, Levi Marchbanks, Miller, Kauffman and Cota. Miller and Cota each hit doubles. Cota, Kauffman and Steinbacher scored runs. C. Holly, Miller and Marchbanks each had an RBI.
Brett Lane led Newport hitting with three, including a double and three RBI.
