Newport 10, Sweet Home 2
The Huskies lost 10-2 in softball Monday night at home to Newport.
It wasn’t among the Huskies’ best outings, Coach Steve Hummer said. “Hopefully, we learned a little about being mentally tough.”
Pitching was rough, with Tasha Saunders pitching the first 3 1/3 innings and Riggs pitching in relief. Each walked five batters, and Saunders gave up six hits. The two combined for three strikeouts.
At the plate, Becky Spencer came up with two hits, and Tiffanie Ciulla added one.
On Thursday, the Huskies defeated Taft by the 10-run rule in the fifth inning, 15-3.
Shelby Gillespie went 2-3 to lead the Huskies in hitting with a triple. Hailee Huenergardt hit a triple, and Spencer had two hits. The team had 10 hits overall.
“We did what we were supposed to do, hit the ball and took care of business,” Hummer said.
The team was largely unharmed by a few mental mistakes in the field and running bases, Hummer said.
Riggs pitched five innings.
On Friday, the Huskies are scheduled to face Philomath, Hummer said. The two teams split their last two games, so the game will largely determine who will go on to state playoffs.
“We’re looking to get better and get ready for that game,” Hummer said. That’ll give the Huskies a chance to meet their goal of making state playoffs.
