Oak Heights Principal Todd Barrett, above left, tests his skills against the school’s chess champion, sixth-grader Miguel Estrada, right, on June 10. Miguel, holding his trophy, right, won the first-ever (at least in recent years) Oak Heights Chess Championship tournament. Teacher Melissa Kruzel, who organized the tournament, said “Miguel, a hard-of-hearing student, demonstrated incredible focus and strategic thinking throughout the season, making his win all the more inspiring.” Twelve students participated in the tournament. Miguel then celebrated by beating Barrett twice. Kruzel said there are plans to continue a Chess Club next year, possibly including junior high and high school students.
