Miguel, holding his trophy, right, won the first-ever (at least in recent years) Oak Heights Chess Championship tournament. Teacher Melissa Kruzel, who organized the tournament, said “Miguel, a hard-of-hearing student, demonstrated incredible focus and strategic thinking throughout the season, making his win all the more inspiring.” Twelve students participated in the tournament. Miguel then celebrated by beating Barrett twice. Kruzel said there are plans to continue a Chess Club next year, possibly including junior high and high school students.
