Nina Irene Johnson, 94, of Eugene died Oct. 27, 2009.
She was born Jan. 9, 1914 in Glover, N.D. to parents Gustav and Lydia (Perlenfein) Buske.
She attended Dickey County Public Schools and La Moure County Public Schools in North Dakota.
She graduated from Oakes High School, Oakes, N.D. She attended North Dakota Normal School in Ellendale, N.D.,
Washington State College and Western Oregon College of Education in Monmouth. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota and did graduate work at the University of Oregon.
Mrs. Johnson spent the first five years of her teaching career in one-room schools. She then taught three years in a consolidated school, prior to teaching four years in Steele Public Schools, all in North Dakota. She then taught in Sitka, Alaska for two years; Idaho Falls, Idaho for a year and the balance of her 37-year teaching career in the Mapleton schools.
She married Martin Alton Johnson in Oakes, N.D. on Nov. 21, 1940.
No matter where Mrs. Johnson lived, she was always sure to be an active member of the local United Methodist Church. She was also a member and past president of Business and Professional Women, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Sorority.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughter, Shari Green of Sweet Home; her son, Marty Johnson of Eugene; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Johnson, on Oct. 10, 1992; and by her sister, Marvel Baird of Marshalltown, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Avamere Riverpark of Eugene. Inurnment will be in Oakes View Cemetery, Oakes, N.D.
