Obituary: Percy Banta

Percy “Leroy” Banta, 92, of Brownsville died Feb. 16, 2010 at a Lebanon care facility.

He was born Nov. 4, 1917 in Crawfordsville, one of 10 children, to Percy Walter and Leona “Etta” (Dalbert) Banta.

He grew up in Crawfordsville, attending Sweet Home High School. Mr. Banta married Maurine Washburn on Dec. 30, 1939 in Vancouver, Wash. They settled in Brownsville. He cared for Maurine until her death in 2006. He remained independent and vibrant until the recent illness that took his life.

Mr. Banta was a logger most of his life and enjoyed being outdoors. He enjoyed rockhounding, fishing, jigsaw puzzles and working on his property. He was a member of AF & AM Lodge 202 Sweet Home.

He is survived by son James of Halsey; daughter Tamara of Portland; two sisters, Lenore Clemm of Gig Harbor, Wash. and Louise King of Fruitland, Idaho; two brothers, Otis of Crawfordsville and Oren of Eugene; four grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bessie Nichols and Jessie Johnson; three brothers, Orville, Leo and Hubert; and a son, Steven.

Graveside services were held Feb. 20 at Crawfordsville Union Cemetery.
