Obituary: Robert Conrad

Robert E. “Bob” Conrad, 83, of Coos Bay died Aug. 26, 2010.

He was born Nov. 4, 1926 in Uniontown, Kan. to Thomas and Della Rae (Gage) Conrad. He grew up in a large, close, fun-loving family. He was educated in Kansas and Washington states public schools.

After World War II broke out, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as soon as he turned 18. He served through the Vietnam War, retiring fom the Navy in 1965 and going to work for the Sweet Home School District in custodial and maintenance work until his final retirement in 1987.

Mr. Conrad quietly taught his children and grandchildren by example. He will always be remembered by all of them as a role model. He could always make his family laugh. He didn’t talk a lot about his Christianity; he just lived it every single day. He was a member of the Sweet Home Evangelical Church for 45 years, the last seven years of which he also belonged to the First Christian Church of North Bend.

Mr. Conrad is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie E. “Bette” (Voetmann) Conrad; sons Dan and daughter-in-law Vanessa Conrad of Sweet Home, and John and daughter-in-law Kelly Conrad of North Bend; daughters Deb Conrad of Coos Bay, and Cyndi and son-in-law Tom Rinehart of Sweet Home; brothers Charles and sister-in-law Lillian Conrad of Corvallis, Dick and sister-in-law Norma Conrad of Davenport, Wash. and Don and sister-in-law Cindy Conrad of Waterloo; sister, June and brother-in-law Dave Lawrence of Port Hueneme, Calif.; 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, 31 nephews and nieces and a multitude of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Della Conrad; daughter Linda Conrad; brothers Tom, Jim and David Conrad; and sisters Edith Mason and Ruth Duerre.

Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6 at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Gilliland Cemetery. A light lunch will follow at the Sweet Home Evangelical Church, 1347 Long St., followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. with Rev. Don Preston presiding.
