Doris L. Nieman

Doris Lenora Nieman, 81, of Sweet Home died on Wednesday, April 28, 2004.
She was born on Aug. 14, 1922 in Montesano, Wash., the daughter of Bryan and Vashti Fay Leverich Orndoff. She grew up in Crawfordsville from the age of two.
She attended Crawfordsville Grade School in the original two-story building and graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1940. She later attended Capitol Business College in Salem.
After business college, Mrs. Nieman worked in the offices of Power and Davis Logging and eventually was transferred to Santiam Logging operations.
She married Byron Nieman on Aug. 12, 1942 in Corvallis. They owned and operated Nieman’s Tavern in Crawfordsville from 1945 until it closed in the late 1980s.
From the age of two, Mrs. Nieman lived in the same house in Crawfordsville.
She enjoyed her yard work, garden and flowers. She was an avid horse person and loved to ride.
She was queen of the Calapooia Roundup in 1939.
Her enthusiasm for the outdoors is shared by her sons and grandchildren.
During her stay at Wiley Creek Community, Mrs. Nieman spent most of her time reading and cutting articles out of newspapers. She knew a great deal about history and the people of the Sweet Home area.
Mrs. Nieman is survived by her sons, Ed of Sweet Home and Terry of Orland, Calif., and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron, on Jan. 19, 1977.
Graveside services were held on Monday at Crawfordsville Union Cemetery.
