Ernest F. Oar

Nov. 7, 1915-Aug. 5, 2003

Ernest “Ernie” Floyd Oar, 87, of Sweet Home died at Lebanon Community Hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003.

He was born on Nov. 7, 1915 in Bonesteel, S.D., the son of George L. and Fern E. Pence Oar.

He serviced in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a cook on Navy transports. He visited every island in the South Pacific.

Mr. Oar married Dourthea Edwards on March 16, 1947 in Hillsboro. They lived in Sweet Home for 56 years.

Mr. Oar worked in the logging industry for five years then worked for saw and lumber mills, including Santiam, Willamette, Snyder and Joe Gilbert at Gilbert & Eaton logging camp. He retired from James River in 1978.

Mr. Oar loved to farm and raise cattle and horses. He took care of his grandchildren, who helped him work the farm too. For years he sold and hauled firewood.

He was a lifetime member of both the VFW and the American Legion in Sweet Home. He was a member of the Lebanon Moose Lodge.

Mr. Oar is survived by his wife, Dourthea of Sweet Home; daughter, Judy F. Taylor of Sweet Home; Floyd S.L. Oar of Salem and Robert G. Oar of Sweet Home; seven grandchildren; two step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sister, Edna Burgett of Portland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kenneth and Ray Oar.

Graveside services were held on Saturday at Gilliland Cemetery.

The Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements.
