One treated, released in accident, fire

One person was treated and released in a two-vehicle collision and vehicle fire about two miles east of High Deck Road Saturday afternoon.

Brian Douglas Shmaltz, 40, of Salem was headed east on Highway 20 in a 1998 GMC Suburban pulling a horse trailer. He was followed by Todd Wayne Kentner, 38, of Bend driving a 1999 Ford F250.

Schmaltz slowed down and pulled slightly to the right of the roadway, according to the Oregon State Police crash report. Kentner attempted to pass on the left, but Shmaltz turned in front of Kentner to make a U-turn in the driveway of 48765 Hwy. 20.

The two vehicles collided at approximately 3:04 p.m., and Schmaltz’s vehicle caught fire in the center of the roadway.

Sweet Home firefighters and paramedics responded to the accident. Paramedics transported Kentner’s passenger, Lester Joe Kentner, 64, of Prineville to Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital where he was treated and released.

Traffic was stopped both ways for about half an hour before the eastbound lane was opened.
