Operation Santa a success

Once again Operation Santa, sponsored by the Marine Corps Family Foundation, was a big success thanks to local merchants and individuals in our area.

Overall, more than 11,000 deployed troops received ?Christmas in a Box? through this effort.

The group I worked with provided a total Christmas package for 25-plus soldiers. Chocolates, dried fruit, hand warmers and other items went to a total of 98 soldiers. Other chocolates were shared with other groups mailing to troops.

I want to thank the following folks for making this a success:

– Sweet Home Mennonite Church members for their donations of items and help with mailing costs as well as providing volunteers and a place to assemble the packages.

– Lebanon Shop-N-Kart for once again being so generous with their donations of jerky, canned chicken, gum and other items always requested by troops.

– Target stores for a generous gift certificate.

– Rite Aid of Lebanon for again donating a lighted artificial tree.

– Safeway for a gift certificate.

– Hollywood Video collected donations and provided many video movies that will be enjoyed over and over during down time for the troops.

– All the individuals who provided items to send or money to help with mailing.

– Last but certainly not least, Costco Wholesale in Albany for its donation of 516 boxes of Belgium chocolates already gift-wrapped. The troops can only get chocolate during the winter months, so it will be a great treat for them.

A huge thank you to you all, and please remember the merchants that support our troops and thank them as you shop in their stores or see them at community functions.
