P.E.O. Chapter FA of Sweet Home has awarded scholarships to three local women, all of whom are or have attended Sweet Home High School.
They are: Candalynn Johnson, who will major in political science; Shelbey Gillespie, exercise and sports science; and Amanda Hubbard, biology.
Peggy Schroder, chapter education chairman, said the chapter recommends local women for state and international philanthropic projects each year. It also awards scholarship funds to students accepted into Cottey College, an independent, liberal arts and sciences college for women in Nevada, Mo., owned and operated by P.E.O. The chapter also supports women re-entering the work force.
Tedi Massey, a local scholarship recipient, will graduate cum laude from Western Oregon University this June, after majoring in American sign language/English interpreting.
“We are very proud of her accomplishments,” Schroeder said of Massey, who will interpret at WOU’s commencement ceremony.
“We do this, in part, by raising money through various fund-raisers throughout the year,” Schroder said.
Those include a plant sale each spring and a wreath sale during the Christmas season.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our community for supporting our fund-raisers, Schroder said.”
