Pearl grew up in the hills of Western North Carolina. She was of the fourth generation raised on the same plot of land that her great grandfather settled in the mid-1800s. Opportunities were few and the family was very poor.

At the tender age of 7 she lost her mother as a result of a botched surgery. Her father later married Gertrude Luker, who had three daughters. Together they had 11 more children.

Pearl learned early in life to tend to animals, milk cows, garden and sew. Her love of sewing led to years of quilt making, hundreds of quilts, for kids, grandkids, great grandkids and many others donated.

Pearl married Berlin Smith on Oct. 5, 1945, in South Carolina and moved to Ryderwood, Wash.. In 1951 they moved to the place where they would live the rest of their lives, Sweet Home. They proceeded to build a new home and raise their four children.

Pearl loved visitors, friends, neighbors, and especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Pearl is survived by her children, Jack, Connie Shaffer (Greg), Burl (Kris) and Jerry. Also surviving her are 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren. She has one surviving sister Helen Sweeny and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, Berlin; granddaughter Brenda Smith; great-granddaughter, Korinne Lad; great-grandson Kyle Crosby; and 22 brothers and sisters.
