The Sweet Home Planning Commission has announced six quality development awards for 2006.

Among them were the following:

– A commercial award to Nishan Singh for the remodel of the old Hilltop Market and opening of Center Market, 4824 Hwy. 20.

– A commercial award to Dennis and Shannon Thayer for the rest area on the corner of 12th and Main at Sunshine Espresso. The project was completed in partnership with the Sweet Home Economic Development Group.

– A good neighbor award to the Sweet Home Beautification Committee, represented by Alice Grovom and Phyliss Osborn, for landscaping around the Coffee Hut and for the completion of the median strip planter project between 15th and 18th avenues with a $25,000 contribution from SHEDG.

– A good neighbor award to the Kiwanis Club, represented by President Ben Dahlenburg, for its work on the skateboard park, just east of the School District 55 Central Office on Long Street.

– A residential award to Steven and Amy L. Howard of 2109 Long St., for remodeling their home.

– A commercial award to David and Elizbeth Lambert’s State Farm branch office for remodeling the house at 855 Eighth Ave. for use by their office.

“I’m very pleased,” said Charlene Adams, staff for the Planning Commission. “What I found really interesting this year … every one of us had thought of the same ones.”

The Planning Commission gives quality development awards to development projects that improve the quality of life in Sweet Home or the way it looks.

“The Planning Commission always looks forward to this,” Adams said. “It’s a fun thing.”
