The Sweet Home Police Department and the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District have received complaints of a Telemarketer calling local residents attempting to sell some sort of fire safety device.
The company, identified as SPOT Security, told one resident their name stands for ‘Safety Prevention Obvious Tragedy.’ Apparently the company is telling residents that they are working with the City of Sweet Home and/or the Fire District. It is unknown what the device is or exactly what it is supposed to do. When Mike Beaver, the Fire District Chief, called the company to ask for further information, he was hung up on. According to Chief Beaver, “neither the Fire District nor the City endorses this product or company in any way.”
Police Chief Bob Burford contacted SPOT Security of Milwaukie, Oregon. According to Chief Burford; “the company does hold a contractor’s license through the State of Oregon. Apparently no one in charge was available to speak to me but the receptionist verified that they were making calls to sell ‘a fire and medical safety device’ in the Sweet Home area. When asked if they were representing that they were working with the Sweet Home Fire Department, she stated that they ‘worked with many fire departments.”
Chief Burford said that regardless of the product, you should never give out any credit or personal information over the phone unless you initiated the call to a known and trusted company.
Anyone receiving a misleading call from this company is encouraged to contact the Oregon Attorney General’s Office.
