Estacada 43
Sweet Home 26
Confounding the Huskies with a 1-3-1 press they hadn’t seen before, Estacada defeated the Huskies 43-26 Thursday night at home.
Estacada jumped out to a 10-2 first-quarter lead on the strength of that press. The Huskies adjusted and played with Estacada until the last three minutes when their fatigue started showing.
“The girls were getting tired,” Coach Mark Tyler said. The team was still running shorthanded Thursday night. Mahria Zook was still out with an injury and Teresa Lewis returned after about 10 days of with an illness.
“We’re running shorthanded,” Coach Tyler said. “They played hard. They really did. (Estacada) showed us a press that the girls hadn’t seen before.”
But the Huskies adjusted and played a 12-11 second quarter to trail 21-14 at halftime. The Huskies played an 8-7 third quarter to narrow the gap further to 28-22. They tightened the margin to four during the fourth quarter, then Estacada broke the game open with about three minutes left.
“All in all, I’m still happy with the way the girls are playing,” Coach Tyler said. They’re looking and passing better than they have before, although they’re still hitting low shooting percentages.
“The skill level from where we started, it’s come way up; but we still have a ways to go,” Coach Tyler said.
Jessica Brocard led the Huskies in shooting with 14 points. Kaci Trask and Angela Fentiman each added four, and Elizabeth Aman scored two.
The freshmen lost 41-40 to Estacada in overtime after trailing 23-16 at halftime and finishing regulation play tied at 40. Kendra Greene led in scoring with 15, and Mallory Carlson scored 10. The team lost 30-17 to Junction City on Wednesday last week after tying the first half at 12. Jenna Anderson led scoring with seven points.
Junior varsity results were unavailable at press time.
The Huskies play next in the Woodburn Tournament, through the end of this week
