Pressure’s on as Huskies head for track districts

Back at the beginning of the track season it was pretty clear the Huskies would have some speed.

As it turned out, it’s a very special kind of speed for Sweet Home, which goes to the Val-Co track and field district meet Friday and Saturday at Philomath with its sights set on the boys league title.

In their final tune-up before districts, Sweet Home’s young athletes made it clear they are going to be hard to discount, especially the boys.

“If we’re not looking down Philomath’s neck, they’re looking down ours,” said Billy Snow of this weekend’s showdown.

The Husky boys finished first out of 13 teams at the Stayton Twilight Invitational Friday night, scoring 127 points behind five first-place finishes by individual boys – three by Dakotah Keys – and wins by both relay teams.

Estacada was second (83 points) followed by Scappoose (75) and a trio of Val-Co League teams – Newport (60), Philomath (54) and Central (43).

“I thought our guys had a decent meet,” Snow said. “We’ve got to take (those scores) with a grain of salt. A lot of teams, ourselves, included, didn’t have everybody there and some people were not in their top events. By and large, thought, it was a good meet.”

The relays, in particular, were “awesome,” Snow said.

The 4×100 relay team of Land Florek, Brandon Elliott, Sam Macklin and Alex Santana finished in 44.21, less than a second off the 1970 school record of 43.54.

“The short relay just keeps dropping its time and that was with a bad handoff,” Snow said.

Without Dakotah Keys in the lineup, the 4×400 relay team of Rob Callagan, Land Florek, Ramiro Santana and Dakotah Keys ran 3:28.41, which Snow termed “awesome.”

Then there were the individuals. Keys ran 39.77 in the 300 hurdles, dipping under 40 seconds for the first time and had a “great night,” Snow said, winning the 110 high hurdles in 15.43 and the javelin with a throw of 171-5. He also placed second in the long jump with a leap of 20-11 1/2.

Callagan won the 800 in 1:58.61, dropping his personal best time by nearly two second as he held off a late challenge by DJ Flores of South Umpqua.

“Robbie comes through the 200 at 26 seconds and I’m thinking ‘my goodness,'” Snow said. “He led the whole race, though Flores moved up with about 300 to go but Robbie felt him and took off. It was an incredible little run.”

It also moved Callagan, a junior, up to fifth on the school’s list of all-time best 800 runners.

Florek won the 400 in 50.89, dropping his lifetime best and moving into second on the school’s all-time bests for that distance, behind Matt Kragness’ 49.14 set in 2001.

Freshman Tim McDowell scored in the 200 and then high jumped 5-10, to move into fourth place on the all-time freshman best list, three-quarters of an inch behind Keys.

Amos Parmenter also had a good night, taking second in the discus with a massive throw of 129-7, 10 feet over his previous best and good for the top mark in the league this season, ahead of Marc Callagan.

Callagan, who has led the Huskies in the weight events most of the season, had a solid night, taking fourth in the shot and sixth in the discus (123-0).

Sam Macklin set personal bests in both the 100 (second, 11.65) and the 200 (24.13) and freshman David Walters got the coaches’ attention with a 54.51 400, good for third on the school’s all-time freshman marks.

As of Monday, Sweet Home athletes who are ranked first or second in the league going into the district meet are:

Dakotah Keys, first in the 200, 110 high hurdles, 300 hurdles, javelin, high jump and second in the pole vault and long jump;

– Land Florek, first in the 400 and second in the 100;

– Alex Santana, second in the 400;

– Rob Callagan, first in the 800;

– Amos Parmenter, first in the discus;

– Marc Callagan, second in the shot put and discus;

– Kelsey Fisher, second in the javelin; and

– The 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams, both with the fastest times in the league.

“It’s going to take a bunch of us (to win districts), not just Dakotah and Land” Snow said. “Central’s (Eric) Phillips didn’t’ run the 100 and 200 and he’s just a flyer. He has the most pure speed of anybody in the league.”

District schedules were not available until Tuesday, after The New Era went to press.

Girls at Stayton

The girls got second-place finishes from Maria Kropf in the 100 (12.75) and the long jump (15-9 1/2), in which she got a PR, from Amanda Basham in the 1500 (5:02.80) and from Ashley Danielson in the javelin (102-0).

“I thought our girls had a good night,” Snow said.

The 4×100 relay team beat Central by 11-100ths of a second as Newport took itself out of the inter-district rivalry by botching a handoff.

Snow said he expects Central, Sweet Home and Newport to battle for the second state meet entry behind Philomath – but noted that the Warriors are only half a second ahead of the rest of the field.

He said Natasha Perry and Tanesia McDowell both recorded PRs in the 200, while Perry did so in the 100 as well.

“If we could sneak one or both of them into the top seven in districts, that would make a difference,” he said.

Freshman Sami Webb won her heat in the 800 with a five-second PR (2:48.43), after getting off to a slow start, while Jessie Snow recorded a season’s best in the 400 (68.46).

Danielson finished a foot behind Stayton’s Emily Hendricks in the javelin, but Snow said spectators said there was some question as to the mark and her throw may have been longer.

Carissa Swanson was fifth in the 1500 and Jill Mahler ninth in a “great race,” Snow said. Swanson also finished third in the 3000 (1:53.74), both times PRs. with Olivia Johnson sixth. Basham did not run the 3000, as Snow wanted her to take it easy before districts.

“It would be beautiful in the 3000 if we can place three girls,” Snow said of the district race.

Kaitlin Keenon had a “great night” in the field, while Tee Whaley made the finals in a very competitive discus field, placing ninth, Snow said.

As of Monday, Sweet Home athletes who are ranked first or second in the league going into the district meet are:

– Maria Kropf, first in the 100 and long jump, and second in the 200;

– Amanda Basham, first in the 1500 and 3000 and second in the 800; and

– Ashley Danielson, second in the javelin.

“We don’t have a lot of top girls,” Snow said. “We rely heavily on Maria and Amanda. If we can get some girls into second, we can make something happen.”
