Quality competition helps SH shake off rust, post PRs

Sweet Home’s track and field athletes continued their season warm-up process last week by hosting the Darrell Deedon Invitational at Husky Stadium.

The meet, which is usually held at Cascade, honors a longtime Cascade coach, and this year drew Cascade, Philomath and Scappoose, generally among the top 4A Division track programs in the state. Also present was Scio, one of the best in the 3A ranks.

Though the meet was non-scoring, it gave Sweet Home a chance to establish some times and marks to work from, particularly for those hoping to qualify for the Meet of Champions three weeks away.

The girls short relay team of Courtney Kent, Sabrina Davis, Haley Kent and Josie Knight won their event in 54.18, a “good time,” Coach Billy Snow said, fast enough to qualify for the MOC.

Snow said that, with some athletes still getting into shape and a few others nursing soreness of various types, coaches limited many of the Huskies to one or two events.

Winners for Sweet Home were Trever Olson in the 400 (54.40 – a personal best), David Skeen in the javelin (138-0), and Nick Mattson in the pole vault (10-6).

Jade Corliss was a double winner in the shot (34-8) and discus (87-1) for the girls, who also got a victory from India Porter in the 200 (29.29).

Jade was out there throwing again and it was nice to have her back,” Snow said.

He noted that the Huskies turned in a lot of high placements that weren’t victories, the kind of performances that will be valuable when the district meet rolls around.

We have four guys in the javelin who are all right there,” he said. “David won it this time but we have three others who could win on any given day. Especially when we get to the district meet, those thirds, fourths and fifths really add up. We can really rack up points with those.”

He said Mattson’s tie for first in the pole vault came under some “lousy conditions.”

He had some decent vaults out there,” Snow said.

The kids are competitive and they’re willing to work. We’re seeing talents in some areas that we weren’t expecting. “This kid can do this or that kid can help us there.”

The Huskies will be off this week, except for those who participate in the annual Sweet Home Decathlon/Heptathlon, which starts at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday at Husky Field and draw competitors from all over Oregon. As of Monday, 11 schools, representing all six OSAA divisions had athletes signed up to compete.

The Huskies will host Elmira and LaPine on April 4.
