Questions about riot in capital

Editor:

First of all, I want to thank Angelita Sanchez for her willingness to volunteer her time as a city councilwoman and the support she gives to help those individuals who have little or no voice.

I recently viewed a comment reported by The Albany Democrat Herald regarding our City Council member Ms. Sanchez, concerning her view of the riot at the capital on Jan. 6. I also heard the same report on a Eugene TV station identifying Ms. Sanchez as Sweet Home council member.

My confusion concerns Ms. Sanchez’s comment, “she took her son to view an historic event.” Was she referring to the traditional transfer of power, the counting of electoral votes, the declaration of Joseph Biden and Angela Harris as the new president and vice president of the United States, or was the intent to view the coup and invasion of the capitol?

Both of these events were heavily advertised through the media.

“My heart was broken…” (My heart also). My confusion would have been satisfied had the media reported a more thorough explanation as to how her feelings were directed. Sometimes media choose to abbreviate content, due to space or time.

As an elected official of our city (and community), it is important that thoughtful consideration be given when comments are made in public and to the media, and reported even outside the realm of official meetings and duties.
