A rubber duck race raised some $2,030 for the 2013 Sweet Home High School S.A.F.E. (Senior Alcohol Free Event) on Saturday on Ames Creek.

The race included a total of 406 ducks purchased for $5 each. The ducks were placed in the water from the bridge on 12th Avenue at 9:30 a.m., and they floated about 300 yards.

First place went to Duck No. 215, Melissa Wise, mother of Quin Wise. Second place was Duck No. 227, Lynn Jones, mother of Mariah Mourneault. Third place was Duck No. 174, Wendi Melcher, mother of Nate Melcher.

Even though they all won a portion of the proceeds, each person decided to donate winnings back to the S.A.F.E party.

The parent volunteers who helped out with the race included Mike and Glenda Melcher, Scott and Wendi Melcher, Michelle Keene, Becky Cannon and Bruce Wooley.

SHHS senior volunteers included Nate Melcher, Josh Wooley, David Skeen, and Mitch Keenon.

“It went better than expected,” Wendi Melcher said. “They raced out of the tunnel, and it ended up being a very successful day.”

It helps living in a community that knows how to give back and support its children, Melcher said.
