Relax, the sky isn’t falling

Author Michael Crichton in Sunday?s PARADE magazine, spells out exactly how I feel about the world of fear mongers.

Since I was in high school more than 30 years ago, there has been one group or another spreading doom and gloom about life on earth.

Perhaps they had good intentions, but their rhetoric is often unfounded.

We?re running out of oil…the polar caps are melting…the sun?s rays are baking us into clay…there is only one giant Douglas fir left in Oregon and it?s about to be cut down…the world?s population has reached critical mass and the planet is about to drop out of the solar system from the weight.

Enough already.

Some folks get up and eat a frog every morning just so they can be mad at something or somebody all day. That?s the same mentality behind the doom and gloomers.

We?re not saying that we shouldn?t make adjustments as science provides us with the information and technology to do so.

No one wants to see our waters or lands polluted, our cities in decay or our standard of living tossed into a dumpster.

But, scientists, entrepreneurs and good old fashioned common sense have helped us head off the end of the world bluster for decades and will continue to do so.

Our farmers are producing more food and grains than ever, there are some states in the midwest with populations falling, not rising.

As Americans we enjoy an outstanding way of life and we live in one of the most fertile and beautiful countries on the face of the earth.

We should learn to relax, enjoy it responsibly and quit instilling senseless fears into generations of children.
