Editor:
Now and then we get a glimpse of human nature that is rewarding.
On returning from a shopping trip at Safeway this past week, I discovered that a chain, bearing a cross, that I wore almost constantly, was broken, and the cross was gone. The cross was silver, and was unusual, being a bit larger than the usual ones that are worn, and, portraying the “old rugged cross,” had a rougher texture than many others. It had been given to me almost 70 years ago, and had special memories attached to it.
After vainly searching for it, and mentally deciding that it represented a “closure,” I accepted the loss. I communicated my loss to a dear niece, who had a different attitude, and called the store to report it, hoping that someone had found it and turned it in. To her surprise, and mine, this had happened. Gratefully, it is now again in my possession!
To the person who found the cross and thoughtfully turned it in to the store, I am using this means to give you my heartfelt thanks! It could so easily have been dropped in a pocket and forgotten. It renews one’s faith that there are caring people in this world.
Again, thank you! Sincerely,
Rachel F. Vogel
