RICHARD RICE

July 14, 1924 – March 8, 2015

Richard N. “Dick” Rice, 89, of Sweet Home died March 8, 2015 at Hospice Care Center in Albany.

He was born July 14, 1925 to Clifford Guy and Jennie Rice at their homestead in Holley. He graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1943 and, after graduation, went into the Army Air Corps, becoming a 2nd lieutenant and pilot. After his discharge from the service he returned home, took over the family farm in Holley – which has been recognized as a Century Farm – and worked in various local sawmills.

He and his wife, Carroll, were married on Feb. 2, 1951. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.

Through his life Mr. Rice was a musician, self-taught welder, machinist, as well as an all-around jack-of-all-trades. His main hobbies included rawhide braiding and collecting Charles Russell and Frederick Remington art.

He is survived by his wife Carroll; two sons, Mark Rice of Eugene, and Calvin and daughter-in-law Heidi Rice of New Orleans, La.; three grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Clifford and Jennie Rice; three sisters and two brothers.
