Riggs leads golfers to fourth in Mallard Creek tourney

Sweet Home’s boys golf team got its first chance to play at home April 21, fnishing fourth out of six teams at the Sweet Home-Lebanon Mallard Creek Invitational.

Sisters took the team title, shooting 331, with all four of its players finishing under 87 and John Standen shooting a 76 for individual medalist honors.

Jake Riggs shot a career-best 81 to take second overall and lead the Huskies to a team score of 374. Junction City was second with 339, Tillamook third (367), Sweet Home’s “B” team fifth (391) and Lebanon sixth (392).

For Sweet Home, Mike Fontenot shot 95, Blake Martin 98, and Roman Kinney and Eric Holmes 100.

“Maybe that’s a sign of good things to come,” Coach Tom Horn said of Riggs’ performance. “We’re coming down to the end of the season and ne is the only one that has separated himself from the group and is in post-season competition. Everybody else needs to step up.

In a nine-hole junior varsity competition on Monday at Mallard Creek, Mike Fontenot led the Huskies to a a 192-point win over Lebanon (196 points), shooting a 44, good for second place. Kyle Hamilton “shot his best by a mile” to finish with a 47 and third place. The rest of the Huskies were Sten Weld and Kaleb Lane (50), Roman Kinney (51), Cody Hubert (57) and Brian Lucero (65).
