Rodeo queen to be chosen Saturday

The Sweet Home Rodeo will name its 2008 rodeo queen and princess Saturday night.

The coronation will begin with dinner at 5:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. The competition and ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The remaining competitors are Jenna Jessen-Compton, Cera Kem and Amanda Hilburn. Jessica Eli dropped out since The New Era published stories about each contestant beginning last month.

The queen’s “primary job is to promote the rodeo and to represent Sweet Home – and have a whole lot of fun,” court coordinator Elizabeth Fitzsimons said. The queen helps with rodeo planning and operations, and assists in the arena during the event.

The princess helps out with the same things and fills in officially if the queen is unable, she said.

A panel of three judges will select the queen and princess based on an interview earlier in the day, she said, and on a speech and answer to an impromptu question that night. Horsemanship tryouts held in September also will be part of the decision.
