Sweet Home’s newest swimmers got a chance to get their feet wet in competition while the rest of the team got a chance to see how more of the district is shaping up Friday at the Philomath Relays.
Coach Doug Peargin said the relays allow coaches to put their swimmers in three or four races each which gives them a chance to evaluate their teams more extensively than they can in normal meets and, because no team scores are kept, new swimmers can be used more extensively.
“This not only helps coaches evaluate the new swimmers but it helps build confidence in the swimmer,” he said.
The Husky boys won five events: the 4×50 freestyle, the 4×50 breaststroke, the 4×100 freestyle, the 4×100 backstroke and the 4×100 breaststroke, and placed second in three others.
The girls won the 4×50 butterfly and took second in the 4×50 backstroke, the 4×100 intermediate medley and the 4×100 breaststroke.
“Our district is always one of the toughest districts in the state,” Peargin said.
He said Philomath, Blanchet, Sisters and Stayton shape up to be “four of the tougher teams” while on the boys side it will be Central, Junction City and Philomath.
“It looks like Philomath will not only be the team to beat at district but they are easily one of the top three teams at state,” he said.
The Huskies will host the Sweet Home Invitational at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, with a field that includes Philomath, Sisters, Junction City, Central and Stayton.
“This meet will be a preview of the district and state meets,” Peargin predicted.
