Thursday’s track opener at Junction City was a brand new experience for many of Sweet Home’s track athletes – try the entire freshman class – but it didn’t show as the Huskies left coaches impressed in nearly every event they competed in.
“We’re super excited,” said Head Coach Nathan Whitfield following the Tri-County Icebreaker, which featured nine 4A through 1A teams from around the area. “It’s hard to mention anyone specific because we did so well across the board. I don’t think there was a single event we weren’t impressed with what the kids did.”
While the Huskies finished third on both the boys and girls sides – to Elmira and Junction City for the boys, and Oakland and Elmira for the girls, Sweet Home did not enter either hurdles event, the 3000, and some of the jumps.
But they did well in the events they did compete in, starting with the 4×100 relays.
That doesn’t mean Sweet Home came out well in the standings, but the boys were well ahead of the field when they overran the exchange zone – too much speed and not enough timing, and the girls suffered some handoff difficulties.
Freshman Kaylynn Mamac won both the 100 and 200, and anchored the girls 4×400 relay team of all-underclassmen to a win in that event, in 4:44.36, 10 seconds ahead of second-place Elmira.
Whitfield said the mile relay teams “did great,” in finishing second and fourth on the boys side, “particularly since one of those teams got pieced together at the last minute.”
Fellow freshman Amelia Sullens was first in the 400, running 1:10.56.
On the boys side, freshman Conner Stevens was fifth in the 100, in 12.46. Freshman Emilio Grajiola was sixth in the 400, in 1:02.75. Then, in the 800, freshman Kasey Kast was second, in 2:22.24.
In the field, senior Kami Hart posted a 5-foot personal best in the shot, throwing 30-0¼ to finish second, and senior Tanner Waldrop won the discus with a 14-foot PR of 133-10. Junior Mason Lopez, coming off a sixth-place finish at last year’s state championship, finished third in the javelin with a season-opening effort of 143-8.
“Mason was right where he needed to be,” said Whitfield, for whom that event was a specialty in high school.
He said coaches are high on the prospects of this team.
“We have a lot of depth and quality and a lot of young kids. These freshmen have never done track before. If they did, the last time was in elementary school.
He said coaches weren’t particularly concerned with team scores.
“For us, our biggest concern is prepping them for the end of the season. This meet was mostly for the younger kids, to help them understand how track works, understand the format of a track meet.”
Following Spring Break, this week, the Huskies will get back on the road March 30 at Cascadia. Their first home meet will be April 7, when they host Newport and Philomath.
