Santiam Chr. 5, Sweet Home 0
The Huskies girls soccer team gave up four goals in the first half before pulling their game together for the second half hold Santiam Christian to one goal, losing 5-0.
The first half, they didn’t play well, Coach Ramiro Santana said. “The second half, we played really good.”
Santiam Christian is a tough team, Santana said, and “they had us in the first half.”
The second halff, “the team turned around and played tougher,” he said.
Shelby Gillespie had a shot that bounced off the post, and Rochelle Zamacona just missed the goal on another shot, Santana said. “We got there. It just wasn’t one of those days.
“We had some pretty good chances, but just didn’t (make it).”
North Marion 4, Sweet Home 2
The Huskies notched their first two goals of the season against North Marion, but it wasn’t enough as the visitors took advantage of a second-half letdown by the Huskies to win 4-2 Tuesday, Sept. 18.
The Huskies jelled in the first half against North Marion taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, but they let up a little in the second half and the visitors took advantage of that, punching in four goals to take home the victory.
“We should’ve won it,” Santana said. “We played too conservative on defense (in the second half) and we forgot how to pass.”
Jessica Snow scored 1:20 into the game and Brianna Wirth followed with a second goal on a penalty kick a few minutes later.
Santana said his team is continuing to improve, but still needs to learn to deal with some of the mental challenges of the game.
“Their faces are in a better mood than (previously), ” he said. “They just need to come out and be less serious – take it seriously but cheer up.”
He said the Huskies have to learn to take it easy when the other team scores, and “not be frustrated.
“And they are,” he said. “They’re having more fun now.”
