School District 55 will implement a Lunch Buddy Mentoring Program this year involving elementary students from Hawthorne School.
The district hopes to match 20 students with 20 positive community adult role models.
Mentors will be expected to commit one hour per week for the remainder of the school year during which they will have lunch with their mentee at school.
Time after lunch can be spent helping the student with school work, participating in playground activities or just visiting.
Mentoring involves many roles, including listener, companion, advocate, resource person, teacher and confidence builder.
Children in the community overcome adversity better when they can draw on people around them whom they trust and who set good examples for them to follow.
Persons interested in mentoring should call Joan Pappin at 467-7114.
