Kambria Schumacher of Crawfordsville won the women’s sprint triathlon for the third straight year Saturday during the Best In The West Triathlon Festival at Lewis Creek Park.
Schumacher, 25, clocked 10:24.09 for the 500-meter swim, 37.07 for the 12-mile bike ride, and 19:54.06 for the 5K run, for a total of 1:06.12, fourth overall out of 121 finishers.
The overall winner was Brian Gruenemay, 33, of West Linn, who swam 9:56.04, biked 32:08 and ran 18:53.07 for a total time of 1:02.30.
Local finishers from Sweet Home were: Rebecca Wolthuis, 39, who finished 40th overall and first in her age division, swimming 11:06.03, biking 39:19 and running 26:21 to finish in 1:22.30; Eric Mauer, 35, who swam 12:48.04, biked 42:43.08 and ran 25:48 for a total of 1:24.36, 47th overall; Ivan Wolthuis, 41, who swam 11:45.04, biked 40:48.03 and ran 28:36.06 for a total of 1:25:31, 48th overall; Beth Suhr, 48, who swam 12:17, biked 48:42.02 and ran 40:07 for a total of 1:45.52, 97th overall; Mauricio Leyba, 45, who swam 16:47.07, biked 53:51.05 and ran 36:14;01 for a total of 1:51.18, 104th overall; and Diane Leyba, 42, who swam 24:21, biked 51:27.08 and ran 38:46.01 for a total of 2:01.07, 113th overall.
The overall winner of the Half Ironman event Saturday was David Garcia, 42, of Portland, who finished the 1.2 mile swim in 30:26.06, the 56-mile bike portion in 2:27:43, and the half-marathon (13.1-mile) run in 1:29:05 for a total time (with transitions) of 4:33.04. The top woman was Julie Kowal, 32, of Portland, who swam 36:24.07, biked 2:56:08.05 and ran 1:47:28.04 for a total time of 5:22.18.
Jeff Smith of Portland was the winner of Sunday’s Olympic Open Triathlon, which included a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer (nearly 25-mile) bike ride and 10K (6.2-mile) run. He finished the swim in 22.43, the bike portion in 1:03.58 and the run in 37.16.
The top woman was Angie Smith of Salem, who swam 26.17, biked approximately 1:10 (exact time wasn’t available) and ran 43.40 to finish in 2:21.11.
No local athletes competed as individuals in the Olympic event, though Schumacher and two others teamed up in a relay.
