Caleb Goins of Scio was the top finisher in the second annual Sportsman’s Holiday Mile held immediately before the parade on Main and Long streets Saturday morning.
Goins finished first in a field of 48 runners and walkers who turned out for the event, which serves as a fund-raiser for the cross-country and track and field programs at Sweet Home High School.
Goins, who will be a senior at East Linn Christian Academy in the fall, and who placed second in the state 2A finals in both the 1500 and 3000 in May, took the lead early and finished in 4 minutes and 48 seconds, well ahead of second-place winner Brinden Sanders of Sweet Home (5:16), also a high school senior-to be.
Carissa Swanson and Olivia Johnson, both 14 and freshmen-to-be at Sweet Home, were the top two finishers among the women. Swanson ran 6:19, with Johnson finishing in 6:25.
The first finisher under 12 was Kyle Frederick, 10, who ran 7:11, finishing just ahead of Bonnie Kenyon, 10 (7:17).
