The Sweet Home City Council agreed to provide $3,500 toward an Eagle Scout project to provide a shade structure at the Skate Park.

Paden Tyler, an Eagle Scout candidate with Troop 363, has gained approval from the Parks Board, Community Development Department, Police Department and School District 55, which owns the land, to construct the shade cover, said City Manager Craig Martin. It will provide shade and protection from the rain.

Area skaters and spectators have indicated a desire for such a structure, Martin said. The funds have been collected from various sources, including voluntary contributions from Sweet Home utility customers and the Kiwanis Club.

The overall project will cost $10,230.

The structure will be 12 feet by 20 feet with a wall in the back. Concrete columns will help protect against vandalism.

“I would like $3,500 for materials and engineering,” Tyler said in a letter to the council. “However, I will get as many materials donated as possible. I expect all labor to be donated.”

Present at the meeting were councilors Marybeth Angulo, Mayor Craig Fentiman, Jim Gourley, Mike Hall, Greg Mahler and Ron Rodgers. Scott McKee Jr. was absent.

In other business, the council:

n Appointed Phoebe Olsen to the Youth Advisory Council.

n Appointed Gerritt Schaffer to the Traffic Safety Committee and Board of Appeals.

n Recommended to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission approval of a liquor license for beer and wine at Main Street Market #1, the convenience store located at 18th and Main with the 76 gas station.

n Adopted a resolution to establish a procedure for challenging water and sewer bills.
