Second half leads Huskies to win over Stayton

After a sluggish start Friday, the Husky football squad rallied back to a 22-11 win over rival Stayton on the Eagle field.

The Huskies couldn’t get an offensive spark going early in the game and relied on a solid defensive effort to keep it from being a runaway.

Sweet Home mustered only 45 rushing yards in the first two quarters, Coach Rob Younger said, while Stayton scored twice.

The Eagles put eight points on the board when Kiser picked up an 18 yard pass from Miller. Starbuck ran in the extra two points.

In the second quarter, Thatcher kicked a 30 yard field goal.

Adam Knight had his best game of the year in the second half, igniting the Huskies offensively.

Knight rambled 75 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter and Walker caught the PAT pass from Seward.

Knight went on to scored twice more in the second half, an 11 yarder and a one yarder. Wunker kicked both PATs.

On 23 carries, Knight rambled for 180 yards. Levi McCubbins carried nine times for 52 yards.

Overall, the Huskies ran the ball 46 times for 253 yards. Seward connected on four of nine passing attempts for 43 yards. Sweet Home accumulated 296 total yards.

Stayton ran the ball 25 times for 42 yards and completed 9 of 16 passes for 57 yards for the night.

“Stayton had negative two yards in the second half,” Coach Younger said of his team’s improved play.

“In the first half, our defense saved us from them scoring even more points,” Coach Younger said. “Our offensive just put us in poor situations.”

The Huskies carried the ball 16 times in the first half but could amass only 20 yards.

Knight’s big run in the third quarter sparked the Huskies, Coach Younger said.

“We ran 26 times in the second half for 253 yards,” Coach Younger said. “Our execution was so much better and our backs ran harder.”

The entire offensive line was named Offensive Players of the Week. They include Brewer, Vassar, Starha, Miner, Cartwright, Seiber and Rodgers.

Defensive player of the week was Tim Matuszak who came in the second half and made some big plays. “He had a major interception and big second half play for us,” Coach Younger said.

Special teams player was Matt Vassar and Practice team player was Noel Ulep.

This week’s game: The Huskies host Central at 7 p.m. Central beat Sisters 14-12 Friday.

“They will throw the ball,” Coach Younger said. “We can expect to see 35-45 passes. Offensively, we’ll see eight or nine guys in the box.”
