‘Seed Library’ awaits local growers

While the Sweet Home Public Library is known for offering items that feed the mind, it now offers something to feed the body, with its new “Seed Library.”

According to Library Director Megan Dazey, seeds and a cart were procured through a grant and support from Friends of the Library, as well as a sizable seed donation from Sweet Home Emergency Ministries.

How is it possible to “borrow” seeds? The library allows patrons (no library card required) to select up to five free packets per visit to grow and enjoy. In return, he or she is asked to consider donating back any unwanted or harvested seeds, as long as they can be identified.

“I think it’ll be good for the town,” Dazey said. “Since we’ve been talking about having a community garden, I think this is a good first step to get people growing stuff, at least in their yards.”

Available seeds include flowers, vegetables and herbs.

The library, at 1101 13th Ave., is open from noon to 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays.
