SH 2 for 3 in softball, including 10-run win over Sisters

Sweet Home 6, Cottage Grove 1

The Huskies easily defeated Cottage Grove 6-1 at home on the softball field Monday afternoon.

Scoring two in the first inning and one each again in the second and third innings, the Huskies built an early 4-0 lead. They added two more runs in the sixth and gave up a single run in the seventh.

The huskies got their leadoff hitters onto base, and they did their thing, stealing and moving around the bases, said Coach Casey Humphrey.

Megan Graville pitched, giving up four hits and striking out four. She gave up no walks.

Sayles pitched for Cottage Grove, striking out five batters and giving up one walk.

Megan Rubidoux had a huge day at the plate, going 2-2 with a double, triple, an RBI and two runs.

Sarah Wyatt went 3-3. Katie Virtue went 1-4, and McKenzie Cochran went 1-1.

The Huskies are 3-1 in league and 4-3 overall.

They face Junction City, which Humphrey believes will be one of the Huskies’ toughest rivals, on the road Wednesday.

Elmira 4, Sweet Home 1

The Huskies were in a position to win it, but the Falcons held them off winning 4-1 on Saturday at Elmira.

“We left 11 runners on base,” Humphrey said. The Huskies had bases loaded and runners on bases several times. When they finally had their chance on a two-out hit from Shantel Pitts at the end of the game, Elmira caught the first runner at the plate.

The girls did a good job of hitting, but they didn’t get the big hit they needed, Humphrey said. That leaves Humphrey optimistic.

“I would not be surprised if we don’t go beat them the next two out of three,” Humphrey said. “They’re good too, but we’re right there. What we realized is we were there. We just missed that big hit to score three, four, five runs.”

Emily Marchbanks started the game. She gave up four hits and one walk, striking out three batters.

Graville pitched three innings, giving up one hit, striking out two and giving up two walks.

Boytz was the winning pitcher. She gave up one run, six hits and two walks while striking out nine batters.

Wyatt led at bat, going 3-4. Riggs went 1-4, and Pitts went 2-2.

Sweet Home 11, Sisters 1

The Huskies defeated Sisters under the 10-run rule, 11-1 on Friday at home.

The Huskies scored three runs in the first, another five in the second and three in the third, while Sisters scored a single run in the second.

“I think we’ve been working really hard during practice in the cages,” Humphrey said, and that showed at bat in this game. ‘It wasn’t just one or two getting it down. It was our entire lineup, top to bottom, that was swinging it well.”

Pitching, Marchbanks started, striking out five batters and giving up one walk and three hits.

Graville pitched the last two innings, giving up one hit and no walks with four strikeouts.

At bat, Wyatt and Marchbanks went 2-2. Cochran and Riggs went 2-3 with a double and a homerun. Sierra Thayer went 1-1 with a triple, and Graville went 1-2.
