SH dominates Central on home baseball diamond

Sweet Home 8, Central 2

The Huskies defeated Central 8-2 at home on the baseball diamond Monday evening.

“I thought J.P. Williams and Levi Marchbanks did a great job as the pitcher-catcher battery tonight,” Coach Dan Tow said. “We got our bats going early and jumped out to a lead and then had a couple more times where we drove in runs.

“Central has some dangerous players, but we got big outs when we needed them. I was pleased with the way we hit the ball. A number of our guys had big nights with the stick.”

Brock Cota went 2-2 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs. Gavin Kauffman went 2-3 with two RBI. Williams went 2-4. Leif Erickson went 2-3. Marchbanks went 1-2 with a double and two RBI. Brad Valloni went 1-3, hitting a two-run homerun.

“We had a couple errors, but we made a lot of nice plays defensively,” Tow said. “We had a number of big plays that stopped them from run-scoring opportunities.”

Mike Hamilton was the losing pitcher and started for Central. Williams started for Sweet Home and collected the win.

Newport 8, Sweet Home 1

Newport defeated the Huskies 8-1 on April 15.

“I thought Gavin did a nice job on the mound,” Tow said. “It was a tight game into the sixth when Newport got a few big hits and kind of broke it open.

“Our kids competed hard. They just got a few more hits and at the right times. We had a few chances to score runs but couldn’t get the hits when we needed them.”

At bat, Andrew Winslow went 1-1 with a double. Valloni, Williams and Kauffman all singled.

“We really played pretty well defensively,” Tow said. “We had no errors in the game.”

Kauffman was starting pitcher for the Huskies and was credited the loss. Cody Dordan was starting pitcher for Newport. Tristan Metcalf collected the win pitching in relief.
