SH girls finding it hard to gel as team in losses

The Huskies lost 5-1 to Pleasant Hill on the road in girls soccer on Sept. 8.

The Billies scored in the minutes 17, 27 and 38 to lead 3-0 at halftime.

The first one was a corner kick, said Coach Ramiro Santana. The second came from the middle of the field with what he believed was an off-sides play.

The third was from the corner to the middle, with the ball slipping through the keeper’s hands.

In the second half, Pleasant Hill scored seven minutes in and then in the minute 24 from the middle of the field.

In the minute 37, Ashley Wickline dribbled the ball up the middle of the field, shooting the ball into the right corner, beyond the Pleasant Hill’s goalie’s reach.

Sweet Home goalie Hailey Nicholson saved the ball 17 times.

“We played on artificial turf there,” Santana said, and the girls aren’t used to it. They complained that the ball was too fast. “It was hard, too hard for them.”

The Huskies haven’t had a chance to play on the new artificial turf at Husky Field yet, but they’ll play their next game at home on artificial turf, Santana said. That is happening Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 15, against Newport.

“We’re still working on putting our players in the right positions,” Santana said. “We just haven’t played at the level we can get to. We’ve got a good team. We just don’t know how to put it together in a way they can play soccer the way they should.”

The Cottage Grove junior varsity defeated the Huskies JV 9-1 on Sept. 7.

After hosting Newport on Tuesday at 4 p.m., Sweet Home will travel to Sisters on Thursday and play at 6 p.m. They host Sutherlin on Tuesday, Sept. 22, with games starting at 4:30 p.m.
