SH golfers finish fourth in opening match of season

After a wet start to the season, Sweet Home’s golfers finally got two matches in last week, the second an 18-hole event at Tokatee in the Cottage Grove area that included all the Sky-Em teams.

Sweet Home finished fourth out of 11 teams, just behind Cottage Grove, as 2A Oakridge got scores under 90 from all four of its golfers and ran away with the team title. Team final scores were not available.

Coach Pat Davis said it was just nice to get a round in, after several weeks of practice.

With Bryce Daniels out sick, the Huskies went with four varsity golfers instead of the usual five, so every score counted, instead of the normal best four of five.

Steven Bishop led Sweet Home with an 84, after having trouble on the greens, Davis said.

“If he putts at all, he’s under 80,” he said, noting that Bishop four-putted one hole and three-putted two others, but still finished in the top 10.

Michael Tolle shot 90, Chris Melcher finished with 97 and Brenner Roberts shot 116 for a total score of 387.

“If we had had a good fourth score, we would have beaten Cottage Grove,” Davis said.

Earlier in the week the Huskies played a nine-hole jamboree-style event at Springfield Country Club.

“No one played particularly well, but no one played horribly,” he said. “We weren’t really keeping track of winners and losers. We just wanted to play a competitive round and get our feet wet on a different course.”

Sweet Home plays at Diamond Woods (Junction City) Tuesday, April 8, and the JV team will play Thursday at Springfield Country Club.
