Lebanon police officer George Dominy, a Sweet Home resident and former Sweet Home police officer, sustained a minor injury when he was involved in a shooting incident in Lebanon on Dec. 19.
Dominy wrenched his right shoulder while struggling with a wanted subject after a trauma plate in his ballistic vest deflected a knife attack.
Linn County parole and probation was looking for Neil Carillo, 17, on Dec. 17, said Lebanon Police Chief Thor Dahle. An off-duty police officer spotted Carillo on Dec. 20 and reported him to the Lebanon Police Department.
Lebanon officers approached Carillo and attempted to detain him, Dahle said. During a struggle, Officer Justin Bach was cut on the forearm.
Carillo allegedly attempted to stab Dominy in the chest, but the additional plate in his vest protected Dominy, Dahle said. Ballistic vests don’t always stop knives.
During the course of the struggle, Carillo was shot once in the abdomen by Bach, Dahle said.
Lebanon paramedics trans-ported officers Dominy and Bach to Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital and Carillo to Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.
The officers are on paid administrative leave while the Linn County Sheriff’s Office investigates the shooting, Dahle said.
“Obviously, they’re shook up over something like this, but I’m confident in their recovery,” Dahle said.
Dominy has been with Lebanon Police Department for nearly two years. He previously has been an instructor at the Police Academy and a sergeant at Sweet Home Police Department.
Bach has been with Lebanon Police Department for about nine months.
Carillo was arraigned Monday on charges of second-degree assault and attempted second-degree assault.
He has been released from Samaritan Regional Medical Center and is lodged at Linn County Jail and is under medical watch, with bail set at $100,000, said Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller.
