SH opens water polo season with win

The Sweet Home water polo team defeated Corvallis 6 -3 Thursday in their season-opening game at Husky Pool.

After a defensive battle that left both sides scoreless in the first quarter, Corvallis scored first and the Husky squad countered with two consecutive scores to lead 2 -1 at half time.

In the third quarter Corvallis was able to come back and tie the game 2-2 before the Huskies rolled off two quick scores to take a 4-2 lead into the final quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter the Huskies scored twice, building a 6 -2 lead. Corvallis was able to score a desperation goal in the closing seconds but it was not enough.

Scoring for the Huskies were senior Jake Johnson, with three goals, juniors Sten Weld with two and Michael Moser with one.

Head Coach Craig Martin praised his squad for playing solid defense through all four quarters in spite of having limited substitutes to rest players. “Our defense was the key to the win, leading to several Corvallis turnovers and fast break opportunities that we were able to capitalize on,” he said.

Next up for the Huskies will be Cottage Grove at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14 at Husky Pool.
