SH runners finish seventh in Portland to Coast run

A group of runners from Sweet Home High School finished seventh in the male division and ninth overall in the annual Portland to Coast high school relay race last weekend.

Back of the Pack team members Brinden Sanders, Byron Sanders, Dustin Cloud, Robert Callagan, Josh Rice, Dallin Holden, Dakotah Keys, Nikki Smith, KC Hanscam, Land Florek, Ramiro Santana and Jessica Trautwein ran the 36 relay legs to cover 127 miles from the east end of Hawthorne Bridge in Portland to the beach at the end of Broadway Avenue in Seaside.

All the teams that finished ahead of Back of the Pack were from significantly larger communities. Runners must be no more than 18 and can be from more than one school.

Because Sweet Home had only one girl, the team had to run in the male division. Mixed teams must have nearly half or exactly half girls, depending on how many runners are on the team.

Sweet Home’s total time was 15:01.25, 24 seconds off its time from last year. The runners averaged 7:06 per mile for the race.

“When they average 7:05 or :06 per mile, that’s great,” said Sweet Home cross-country coach Billy Snow who, along with runners’ parents and school counselor Jim Kistner, drove vans and provided support for the runners.

The team was organized by Trautwein, who also helped get last year’s team together. Snow said she ran her first leg, but did not feel well, so Smith ran an extra relay leg for her.

Smith said he ran just over 15 miles, including the anchor leg.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” he said Monday. “Kind of tired. I ran just over half a marathon. It was pretty fun, though. I got about an hour of sleep before I ran my second leg.”

He said the competition was tougher this year.

“The other teams were a lot faster than last year,” Smith said.

The top finisher was Cvc Allstars of Salem, which completed the course in 13:31.33 (a 6.23 pace), while Eugene Flash of Eugene finished tops in the mixed category, in 14:23.36 (6:48). Women of the Tribe, from Clackamas, won the all-female division in 17:29.16.
